I guess February is not a great time for fishing in south west Florida.

Please advise as to what fishing gear a beginner needs to give it a try. I'm off to Bass Pro and West Marine this weekend. Jim would rather NOT use blood worms on the boat! We managed to picnic on the boat off North Captiva last week.
Weather is glorious!

suziq45, there are so many ways to catch fish down there, it is hard to know where to begin, but be assured, bloodworms are NOT needed.  Live shirmp are the old standby and will catch just about anything.  If you really want to catch fish (and not just "go fishing") my suggestion is that you hire a guide for a half-day and tell him you want to learn the best ways to catch fish in the area.  A good choice would by my friend Capt. Butch Rickey at http://www.barhoppr.com/  but any local guide would do.

It is hard to beat live shrimp.  You can buy them at Jensens' but your best buy is with the Harbor Master in the main marina. You will need a bait bucket and a short rope to keep them in the water when stopped or use a battery operated aeriateor.

Suzig45:

If you and Jim don"t have fishing gear suggest you stop in at Walmart and talk to the people there, they are well informed, knowledgeable, and friendly.

Terrific suggestions, everyone. Thank you. Plan to use a fishing guide in May to find the best fishing holes.  Jim determined to do this from the boat.
We did manage to catch a wee sea trout in the bay behind Ft Myers Beach.  The interesting thing about that catch was the huge tarpon chasing the poor little guy as we reeled him in. What a day!

Florida Senate Bill #744 would repeal recreational fishing licenses for both residences and non-residences to fish in state waters.

That could be disastrous for the Florida fisheries!  Hey, I don't like paying "taxes" as much as the next guy but the "user tax" imposed only on those that fish, with the money going to improving my experience while fishing is something I am all for.

I thought I was good, now I know I happen to fish at the best time of the year in South West Florida. Evidently, skill is good but timing is everything.

This one is for you captiivated.  The joys of catching a 26" snook from a fully decked out kayak!  Listen carefully to Capt. Butch's exclamations of "joy"!

Don,

I'm really impressed.  The snook catch was great but your maneuvering around all that gear, trolling motor, extra rod and reel, oars and still getting the video deserves a prize.

captiivated, I wish that was me catching that snook instead of what I am currently doing, sitting at my desk working in SLC.  Actually, that is Capt. Butch Ricky, the fishing guide that I went out with in his kayaks last Thanksgiving.  This is from his fishing report from last week and it is amazing that he could do the video, get tangled up so much and still land the fish.  I think he is wearing a head-mounted camera.

OK, the prize goes to the Guide. For what it's worth I would have ended up in the water being towed by the snook. Don,t think I'm going to do the kayak thing. Really enjoyed the video.

Thanks Donny
